MATERIALS
Rocks are reliable
Material matters
Earth pigment is the origin of painting and represents the location
The colour, stone and place it came from are all on the canvas
Earth minerals are gathered responsibly from the landscape
Gum Arabic used as binder
Foraged feathers are shed naturally annually from peacocks on site
Fixative applied to ensure durability

SOURCES
Sustainability at core
Our landscape constantly changes
Fast after flood or slowly over millennia
Mountains are worn and rocks broken down by weather into small pieces, washed away or blown by wind
Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, soil and inorganic minerals and the insoluble particles they contain offer vast opportunity for paint pigments
Sources may include soil, clay, slate, shale, hematite, calcite, sandstone, chalk, charcoal
Layers of sandstone are a mix of sand, mud and clay together called sediment and forming layered sedimentary rock

MEDIUM

Humans represented by the handwork of the artist

PIGMENTS
Created by Earth
Stable, light fast, long lasting natural pigments
Unique hues linked to terroir and eco system
Muted, calming, restrained earthy palette
Each pigment behaves differently, whether hard or soft and powdery
Surrendering to the found result is life affirming and a way of embracing the unique character of our natural world
Backdrops are neutral chalky off whites
COLOUR
Colour determines direction
In medieval times durability was key in choice of colour
We have evolved in a world where chromatic solidity and uniformity are rare
Industrialisation transformed solid colour from exception to norm
Importance attributed to variety and choice
Over 16 million colours available
Yet the human eye may only distinguish 200
The artist uses a soothing cool neutrals palette
Impact on viewer is aimed at being harmonious and kind on the eye
