COLOUR WHEEL
Set of 2 on 100×150 cm canvases
Wagon wheels with 8 spokes were common in 19th century Britain

Original farm wagon wheels still on site are the inspiration for this alternative colour wheel

OLYMPICKS
Set of 3 on 100×150 cm canvases
Colour is a way for plants to attract pollinators
Preferences of birds and insects may seem strange until we realise their eyes are structurally different to ours and discern an alternative spectrum
Plants have evolved a range of shades to match visual preferences of their pollinators and ensure they are picked
Colours are seen by birds and insects but not all perceived the same way
Bees gravitate to purple, butterflies to pink, wasps to yellow, some birds red
Nature is in an Olympic race to win attention

UPSTARTS
Set of 3 on 100x150 cm canvases
Plants rise suddenly from a humble dormant position in the soil to great height and position of consequence

NO ONE WINS
Set of 3 on 100×150 cm canvases
If both players play perfectly at Noughts and Crosses the game will always end in a draw
The game’s inherent inability to result in a definitive win if played correctly mirrors how some battles are ultimately futile

LIVING DAYLIGHTS
Set of 4 on 100×100 cm canvases
Genetic changes triggered by exposure to sunlight make leaves produce the floral hormone florigen
It tells a plant when to flower
Plants make more or less florigen in response to daylight
Some species need more daylight than others
Day neutral plants are the most flexible and bloom if exposed to anything from 5 to 24 hours of continuous daylight
Such as sunflowers and tomatoes

Short-day plants need 8 to 10 hours of daylight by followed by 14 to 16 hours of darkness
If the darkness is interrupted at all, they do not bloom
Examples include dahlias, poinsettias and some soy beans

Long-day plants need 14 to 16 hours of continuous daylight, followed by 8 to 10 hours of darkness
The daylight is more critical than the dark
Examples include lettuce, radish, and globe thistle

The fourth painting in series is in full block colour
It invites reflection on a potential world with no light variation at all

LOTS OF LOVE
Bold Bright Fade Faint

While the dynamic life force diminishes and fades until life itself is faint, the love is always there
This transition is reflected in more muted pigments

This series is dedicated to Lexi and Bumble

RANDOM
Set of 4 on 100×100 cm canvases
While true randomness in nature is observed at the quantum level many natural events seem random from a human perspective
Flightpaths of insects often include random changes in direction which makes them unpredictable to predators
Complex organised patterns seen in swarms can emerge from self organised behaviour of many agents
Individual interactions are locally random but collectively create order
This artwork is inspired by the endless joy brought by seemingly random serendipitous little events occurring throughout the natural world
Especially unexpected growth in extraordinary places
Offering a sense of resilience and comfort in the power of natural life

The set of four features random feather patterns In a harmonious selection of colours

Each canvas can feature the same recipe of preferred hues
A gradation effect can be achieved with careful use of lightened pigments
Or each of the four might carry a different particular muted colour choice

The overall effect is always joyful and, like all SOFT ROCK ARTWORK, tailored to the eye of the viewer
